Texas bill to offer protections for breast cancer patients

A landmark bill presented to Texas lawmakers aims to require doctors and medical professionals educate breast cancer patients about all of their surgical options before they go under the knife, according to Texas' KENS.

The bill hopes to bring an end to such stories as that of 34-year-old Karrie Simpson, who underwent three different procedures, some of which could have been avoided if she knew her other options.

"I don't want anybody else to have to go through what I did. Breast cancer is scary. There are a lot of women out there who even though a mastectomy might not be the choice for them, they need to know all their options," Simpson told the news source.

The bill was presented by Texas representative James White and if passed would mandate that doctors inform their patients of all surgical options before an operation takes place. A similar law is already on the books in New York State, and Texas hopes to be the next to keep breast cancer patients aware of their options.

According to BreastCancer.org, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women, accounting for 1 in 4 diagnoses.
