Study shows a drink a day may increase risk of breast cancer

A new study published in the latest issue of Alcohol and Alcoholism shows that a drink a day may increase the risk of breast cancer, according to CBS News. It has been reported before that a drink a day could lower the risk of stroke and can help individuals age healthily. However, this new study shows that may not be the case for women.

The researchers examined 113 previous studies on breast cancer and light drinking of those in Germany, France and Italy. The findings showed a 5 percent increase of the risk of breast cancer. Additionally, those who drank heavily, meaning three or more drinks each day, could see a 50 percent increase, the media outlet reports.

According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point during her lifetime. Not only is this the second most common form of cancer among women behind skin cancer, but it is the second leading cause of cancer-related death among women, following only lung cancer.
