Free clinic saves lives

A free health clinic in Suffolk, Virgina, offers patients, including women battling against breast cancer, a new chance at life, WVEC reports.

For the past four years, The Western Tidewater Free Clinic has been a savior to the uninsured or under-insured people within neighboring counties, many of whom are women in late stages of breast cancer.

According to the news outlet these women tend to be unemployed and have been forced to put their health last, after being able to afford basic necessities like food, clothing and a place to live.

With a $173,000, two-year donation from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the clinic is now able to treat even more deserving people, like Lou Ann Sallaz, who said the clinic saved her life after she lost her job and health insurance, but still wanted to get a mammogram.

She found the clinic, got the test and found out she had breast cancer.

"I probably would have let it slide a little longer if I hadn't been told that I could get a free mammogram through this clinic," Sallaz told the news source. "This clinic has given me back my life, technically, by finding out my diagnosis."

Early detection and raising breast cancer awareness is key to surviving breast cancer, as stage one diagnoses have a 88 percent five year survival rate, according to Cancer.org.
