Breast cancer patients at Calgary hospital can now wear deodorant during treatment

While undergoing treatment for breast cancer certainly leads to changes in one's lifestyle, one of the most unspoken struggles may be the most superfluous - not wearing deodorant. Women are advised to refrain from using antiperspirants because of increased toxicity levels on their skin.

However, the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary, Canada, is now telling women that it's okay to use deodorant during their treatment, according to the Calgary Herald. Their recommendation comes after a study that followed 198 women with early-stage breast cancer during a randomized trial.

"We had been hearing a lot from women who said it really bothered them they couldn't be wearing their antiperspirant. It was just one more thing that was decreasing their body image," Donna Gies, a radiation oncology nurse, told the news outlet.

Considering one in eight women will be diagnosed with the disease at some point during their lifetime, this may be exciting news. And, it looks as though the move is already doing great things for people's well-being.

"I think in my personal life, it did definitely make a difference. I have an active lifestyle with a two-year-old and I try to keep my life as normal, as routine as possible," Jennifer Davin told the news outlet.
